NEET 2026 BDS Cutoff: Expected Cutoff Marks for Government & Private Dental Colleges

The NEET UG 2026 re-exam was held on June 21, 2026, after the exam was rescheduled by NTA. With counselling expected to begin after the result declaration, BDS admission this year looks highly competitive for students aiming for government and private dental colleges. If dentistry is your goal, understanding the NEET BDS cutoff 2026 before counselling starts is important. This guide covers the expected qualifying cutoff, admission cutoff trends, government vs private college cutoffs, category-wise data, and Tamil Nadu-specific trends to help you make a confident seat choice.

Before looking at any numbers, this distinction matters more than anything else in this guide. Clearing the qualifying cutoff only makes you eligible to participate in counselling. It does not guarantee a seat. The admission cutoff; which varies by college, category, quota, and counselling round is the number that actually determines whether you get in.

Tamil Nadu dental admissions run through a separate state counselling process under the Tamil Nadu Medical Admission authority, distinct from MCC’s AIQ counselling.

Tamil Nadu BDS Cutoff Structure:

  • 15% of seats in government dental colleges go to AIQ (national competition)
  • 85% of seats are filled through Tamil Nadu state counselling (state merit list)

For state quota seats in Tamil Nadu, the NEET cutoff is influenced by state competition levels, category-wise seat allocation, and state rank rather than All India Rank. Tamil Nadu NEET counselling typically includes multiple rounds, and cutoffs may change in each round due to seat movement and vacancies.

Tamil Nadu Government Dental Colleges — Key Institutions:

  • Government Dental College, Chennai
  • Government Dental College, Madurai
  • Government Dental College, Trichy
  • Government Dental College, Tirunelveli

Expected BDS cutoff for Tamil Nadu state quota (General/OC category): 460 – 510 marks (based on 2025 trends, subject to change based on 2026 competition).

BDS is a strong alternative for students who are passionate about healthcare but miss MBBS cutoffs by a narrow margin. It is a fully regulated, clinical degree; not a fallback, but a genuine career choice with strong scope in both private practice and government service. Before finalising BDS as your choice, here’s what the course involves:

BDS Course DetailInformation
Full FormBachelor of Dental Surgery
Duration5 years (4 years study + 1 year compulsory internship)
Total BDS Seats in India (2026)Approx. 27,000 – 28,000 seats
Government BDS SeatsApprox. 3,000+ seats
Regulated ByDental Council of India (DCI)
Career PathsDentist, Oral Surgeon, Orthodontist, MDS specialization
Average Starting Salary₹3 – ₹8 LPA (private practice can be significantly higher)

Step 1 — Check your qualifying cutoff. Once NEET results are out (expected June 13–15), confirm you’ve cleared the qualifying cutoff for your category.

Step 2 — Calculate your realistic admission range. Use the safe score zone table above, not just the qualifying cutoff, to understand which college tier you realistically compete for.

Step 3 — Register for both AIQ and State Counselling. MCC handles AIQ counselling; Tamil Nadu students must additionally register for Tamil Nadu state counselling. Missing either registration window means missing those seats entirely.

Step 4 — Fill choices strategically. Prioritise government colleges at the top of your preference list. Every AIQ round — including the stray vacancy round; typically drops ranks by 5,000 to 7,000, which can open college options that weren’t available in Round 1.

Step 5 — Don’t skip the stray vacancy round. Many BDS seats become available in the stray vacancy round that weren’t accessible earlier. Borderline candidates who stay active in all rounds often secure better seats than those who withdraw after Round 1.

The re-exam has happened. The score is what it is and nothing changes that now. What changes between now and counselling is preparation. Students who know their safe score zone, realistic college tier, and Tamil Nadu state quota options make better decisions under pressure. Use this guide before the result arrives, not after.

Dentistry is a five-year commitment to a career that genuinely matters. Choose your seat with your eyes open.
