JoSAA Round 2 result 2026 is out. Your seat is showing on the screen. But some students cannot confirm it yet. Their Class 12 marks fell below 75% . But that is not their fault, it is because of errors in CBSE’s new marking system. IIT Roorkee has given them a way out. JoSAA has also added 4,470 new seats this year. Here is what you need to know.
The 75% Eligibility Rule: What Every JoSAA 2026 Student Must Know?
Under current IIT admission rules, candidates seeking admission must either secure at least 75 percent marks in Class 12 or be within the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the requirement is 65 percent.
This rule has existed for years. However, in 2026, it became the centre of a storm; because of what CBSE did with its answer sheet evaluation system.
| Category | Minimum Class 12 Marks Required |
| General / OBC / EWS | 75% aggregate OR top 20 percentile of board |
| SC / ST / PwD | 65% aggregate OR top 20 percentile of board |

The rule itself has not changed. IIT Roorkee confirmed that there will be no relaxation in the 75 percent eligibility criterion for admission to IITs through JEE Advanced 2026. Furthermore, IIT Roorkee stated that relaxing the rule is not feasible since candidates from multiple education boards across the country participate in the process.

The CBSE OSM Controversy ~ What Happened?
The problem began after CBSE used an On-Screen Marking system to evaluate student answer sheets this year, but significant discrepancies came to light, causing distress among a large number of students. Several students who later qualified for JoSAA counselling found they had failed to meet the eligibility criteria in the CBSE Class XII exam, and applied for reevaluation.
In other words, students who cracked one of India’s toughest exams found themselves locked out of IIT admissions because of marks they believe were incorrectly evaluated by their own board.
The emotional weight of that situation is enormous. You cleared JEE Advanced 2026. You earned your rank. And a marking system error is standing between you and your IIT seat.
The Provisional Relief: What IIT Roorkee Has Offered?
Here is the good news for affected students.
IIT Roorkee has granted relief to students who have applied for reevaluation of their CBSE marks. IIT Roorkee will allow these students to apply for JoSAA counselling on a provisional basis, they will be allotted seats if they qualify in the counselling, provisionally. IIT Roorkee confirms seats after the fourth round of counselling, if by then they are able to meet the eligibility criteria following the reevaluation of their CBSE results.
This is not a permanent exemption. However, it is a meaningful lifeline, it ensures that students do not miss the counselling window entirely while waiting for their reevaluation results.
| Condition | Detail |
| Who qualifies for provisional relief | Students who have applied for CBSE reevaluation and scored below 75% |
| What they can do | Participate in JoSAA counselling on a provisional basis |
| Seat allotment basis | Rank obtained in JEE Advanced 2026 — not board marks |
| Confirmation deadline | Submit revised CBSE scorecard by emailing orgjee@iitr.ac.in before July 15 |
| When seats are confirmed | After Round 4 of JoSAA counselling, subject to meeting eligibility |

The key takeaway; if you are in this situation, do not wait. Apply for reevaluation immediately if you have not already, and participate in JoSAA counselling without delay. Missing the counselling window will cost you the seat regardless of what your reevaluation result shows.
