Last-Minute Exam Prep: What to Do (and What Not to Do)

Does everyone feel the wave of panic rising with exams nearing? Textbooks, notes, and guides all scattered over not knowing where to start or how to utilize the last few days before exams. It is not possible to magically study everything and write in exams within a day or two but it’s always possible to utilize the most out of the remaining time.  Let’s check out some tips that will help during last-minute exam stretch:

Things to do during last-minute exam preparation:

  1. Prioritize topics

Take your texts or materials go through them, analyze and write the important topics, or high-weightage topics from each chapter in a separate sheet. Focus on these topics to ensure you have covered important, high-weightage chapters.

  1. Prepare a cheat sheet

Make a sheet dedicated only to formulas, key concepts, and definitions. Learn and have a basic understanding of the summary of each chapter. This will help in organizing them at once and will be handy during last-minute revision.

  1. Recall actively

Instead of simply reading the notes, try to write them if you don’t have time for that, revise the topics without looking at your book. Teaching concepts to someone is also a good method. This will help in storing what you learned in the memory for a long time.

Things to avoid during last-minute exam preparation:

  1. Don’t panic

Seriously never stress out and panic this will affect your thinking ability and make it harder to recall even what you learned. Take a deep breath and be calm. Tell yourself that “you can tackle this”

  1. Don’t try to learn everything

The time is tickling, the portions are more but it’s impossible to absorb everything in one night. Don’t try to learn everything at once this will only drain your energy and demotivate you. Focus on what you can realistically cover.

  1. Don’t compromise your well-being

Never skip your meals or your sleep for cramming at the last minute of the exam. This will only make you feel tired mentally and physically. Remember to sleep, eat, and take breaks

Last-minute exam preparation is about maximizing the limited time time to its fullest. Having a clear vision of how you are going to utilize the last few days or hours of the exam can make a difference in the results. Therefore, be focused, do not overthink, and prepare wisely for the exam. Make sure to nourish your mind with positive thoughts and give your best.

“A minute’s a minute. The question is what you do with it.”

Go for it!
