How to score 95+ in TN Class 12 Chemistry?

Are you thinking about how to score 95+ in the TN class 12 chemistry exam? Balancing the chemical equation is hard only till you balance your study strategy. It is easy with smart study strategies and preparation hacks. The equations may be confusing, the laws may be difficult to understand, but all of this can be sorted out with consistent practice and learning. The Tamil Nadu board exams are around the corner.  This blog is a study plan aligned with the Tamil Nadu state board class 12 chemistry exam.

Comprehend the exam pattern and syllabus:

Chemistry is the subject which can increase as well as decrease your marks. The first step to success is to understand the Tamil Nadu Class 12 Chemistry exam pattern and syllabus. Find the TN 12th Chemistry chapter-wise weightage to boost your preparation. Chemistry can be divided into three parts. They are,

  • Physical chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Inorganic chemistry

There are 15 chapters in the Tamil Nadu Class 12 Chemistry book. Go through those chapters and prepare a blueprint for yourself on which subjects you are thorough and on which you need to concentrate more.

Volume 1:

  • Metallurgy
  • p-Block Elements-I
  • p-Block Elements – II
  • Transition and Inner Transition Elements
  • Coordination Chemistry
  • Solid State
  • Chemical Kinetics

Volume 2:

  • Ionic Equilibrium
  • Electro Chemistry
  • Surface Chemistry
  • Hydroxy Compounds and Ethers
  • Carbonyl Compounds and Carboxylic Acids
  • Organic Nitrogen Compounds
  • Biomolecules
  • Chemistry in Everyday Life

Go through all these topics and devise a clear plan for yourself on how to prepare all these chapters for the TN Class 12 Chemistry Exam.

The exam pattern for TN Class 12 chemistry is the same as all other subjects in science.

  • The exam is conducted for 100 marks (70 marks for internal and 30 marks for practical).
  • The Question paper is divided into 4 sections.
  • Part A = 1×15=15
  • Part B = 6×2=12
  • Part C = 6×3=18
  • Part D = 5×5=25

Concentrate on high-weightage chapters first and then go through the small chapters. It will be easier for you to prepare for the exams.

Strategies to score 95+ in TN Class 12 Chemistry Exam:

” A vision without a strategy remains an illusion” , says Lee Bolman.

Similarly, without a strategy, success remains an illusion. Success in exams comes with strategies. Here are some strategies for you to succeed in the TN Class 12 chemistry exam.

Note-taking tips for TN class 12 chemistry:

Note-taking makes exam preparation easy, interesting and understandable. While learning chemistry, it’s mandatory to take notes as it is filled with formulas, equations, and numerous laws and elements.

  • Make single-page notes:

Prepare a formula sheet for every single chapter. Write the equations, reactions and key concepts in each lesson on a single A4 sheet. This sheet will help you to revise instantly till the Chemistry board exam 2026. Prepare the notes clearly and don’t leave any formulas or equations. Believe me, these papers will be your ultimate guide.

  • Target weak areas:

In Chemistry, some may excel in organic chemistry and fail in inorganic chemistry, and it may happen vice versa. So, it is important to focus on your weak areas. Identify which lessons you are consistently losing marks in, or which type of questions you are losing marks on. Use a previous year TN Class 12 chemistry exam question paper to identify which question types you’re losing marks in, whether it is balancing an equation, distinguishing, definitions, etc. Know this and focus on this perspective to achieve great in the TN class 12 chemistry exam.  Identify, analyse and strengthen your preparation.

Smart study techniques:

  1. Study chemistry when your mind is active and fresh.
  2. Don’t memorise, understand everything.
  3. Plan your chemistry study plan daily and execute it.
  4. Take mock tests each week to check your progress
  5. Take short breaks and maintain a proper sleep schedule. Avoid burnout.

Time management tricks:

Many students lose their marks due to improper time management. Practice it when you prepare for the exam. Practice learning and writing simultaneously to retain the concepts that you learnt earlier. This will make you present the concepts in the exams faster and save your time. While preparing for the exam, discover tricks by yourself and implement them to improve time management skills.

Common mistakes to avoid in TN Class 12 Chemistry exam:

  • Mugging up the laws and equations instead of understanding them.
  • Ignoring diagrams, SI units and equations.
  • Learning large lessons in the last moment.
  • Skipping model question papers.
  • Not practising enough PYQs.

Category-specific tips:

  1. Physical chemistry:
  • Formula sheet: Keep a handwritten formula sheet containing all formulas and equations.
  • Units boost the score: Always write the correct SI units in the final answer of any numerical problem. If a problem involves a chemical cell diagram, practice labelling the anode, cathode, and salt bridge correctly.
  • Step marks: Steps carry marks in the Tamil Nadu Board Exams. Even if your sum is wrong, you’ll gain marks for writing the correct formula and steps. So, never skip steps.
  1. Organic Chemistry:
  • Name Reactions: Name reactions are so important when it comes to chemistry. Writing a single equation will boost your marks and also save time. Memorise all name reactions (like Hoffmann Bromamide, Cannizzaro, Clemmensen Reduction) and write them out 5 times each, as these are direct, high-scoring questions.
  • Reaction Flowcharts: Create a master flowchart starting from a simple organic compound (e.g., Methane or Ethanol) and map out how it converts into 10-15 different compounds via various reactions. This builds connectivity.
  • Mechanism Practice: For 5-mark questions, draw the mechanisms clearly with proper curved arrows indicating electron movement.

These are some of the major components to concentrate on in organic chemistry.

  1.  Inorganic Chemistry:
  • Block elements: While learning block elements, learn the atomic size, atomic number, and ionisation enthalpy. Also, learn the exceptions clearly which are present in some group of elements.
  • Comparison Tables: While learning Block elements, create tables comparing Lanthanoids, Actinoids and their properties. Comparison questions are very common in the TN Class 12 chemistry exam.

Finally, it is in your hands to prepare for the exam smartly and continuously. Consistency is the catalyst which can speed up your exam preparation, and it can give you exceptional results. With all these smart tricks in your hand, you will certainly score 95+ in the Tamil Nadu class 12 chemistry exam.
