The CBSE Cut Off Calculator helps students estimate their eligibility for undergraduate admissions in professional programs like Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) and Medical(MBBS). This calculation is especially relevant for students applying through state-level counselling processes, such as in Tamil Nadu, where admissions are based on a cut-off derived from Class 12 marks.
Why Is the CBSE Cut Off Important?
Colleges and universities use cut-off scores to rank students fairly during the admission process. These scores are derived from your CBSE Class 12 marks in key subjects and are used to shortlist candidates for engineering or medical programs. Understanding your cut-off helps you make informed decisions about which colleges to apply to.
Engineering Cut Off Calculation
Formula for Engineering Cut Off
For Engineering admissions, the cut-off is calculated using the following formula:
Engineering Cut-Off = (Mathematics ) + (Physics /2) + (Chemistry / 2)
Example Calculation
Suppose a student has the following CBSE Class 12 marks:
- Physics: 90
- Chemistry: 88
- Mathematics: 95
Now, calculate each component:
- Physics: 90 divided by 2 = 45
- Chemistry: 88 divided by 2 = 44
- Mathematics: 95 (as it is) = 95
Add them together:
Engineering Cut-Off = 45+ 44 + 95 = 184 out of 200
This means the student’s engineering cut-off mark is 184/200.
Medical Cut Off Calculation
Formula for Medical Cut Off
For Medical admissions, the formula is slightly different:
Medical Cut-Off = (Physics / 4) + (Chemistry / 4) + (Biology / 2)
Example Calculation
Suppose a student has the following CBSE Class 12 marks:
-> For Bio-Math
- Physics: 92
- Chemistry: 90
- Biology: 96
Calculate each part:
- Physics: 92 divided by 4 = 23
- Chemistry: 90 divided by 4 = 22.5
- Biology: 96 divided by 2 = 48
Add them together:
Medical Cut-Off = 23 + 22.5 + 48 = 93.5 out of 100
The student’s medical cut-off mark is 93.5/100.
–> For Pure Science
- Botany : 89
- Zoology : 95
- Chemistry: 84
- Physics : 91
Calculate each part:
- Physics: 91 divided by 4 = 22.75
- Chemistry: 84 divided by 4 = 21
- Biology: 89 divided by 4 = 22.25
- Zoology: 95 divided by 4 = 23.75
Add them together: Medical Cut-Off = 22.75 + 21 + 22.25 + 23.75 = 89.75 out of 100
The student’s medical cut-off mark is 89.75/100.
Interpreting Your Cut-Off Score
- Above 95: Strong eligibility for top government and private institutions.
- Between 85 and 95: Good chances in mid-tier colleges or self-financing institutions.
- Below 85: May need to consider alternate streams or specialized undergraduate programs.
What If Your Cut-Off Is Not Competitive?
A lower cut-off does not mean the end of career opportunities. In today’s job market, success is increasingly driven by skills, hands-on learning, and industry exposure.
